Assistant Professor in International Organizations (University of Mannheim)


The School of Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim invites applications for a
Assistant Professor in International Organizations (W1).
We seek a scholar with an innovative research agenda and internationally visible publications in the field of International Organizations. The assistant professorship (Juniorprofessur) should be committed to teaching on the B.A. and M.A./Ph.D. programs in political science. Contributions to the research activities at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) and the Collaborative Research Center ‘Political Economy of Reforms’ (SFB 884) are expected. We explicitly welcome teaching in the social science doctoral program (taught in English) of the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS).
Candidates are required to have successfully completed their graduate studies and received an excellent doctoral degree in the social sciences. Depending on the necessary requirements, the successful candidate will be hired on a temporary civil servant position (W1) for up to three years. Following a positive evaluation the position can be extended up to six years in total based on the legal preconditions (§ 51 Abs. 7 & 8 LHG). A tenure track option is not available.

PhD Scholarship in European Union Politics


The Department of Politics and Public Administration of the University of Limerick is inviting applications for a PhD scholarship in the area of European Union Politics. Applications are especially welcome from candidates who wish to study aspects of the European Parliament or the Council of Ministers in their role as law-making institutions. Skills in research methods or a willingness to acquire them would be an advantage.


The scholarship covers tuition fees (at EU rates) and provides a maintenance grant of €7000 per year for up to four years, subject to academic performance. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the tutorial teaching of the department.

Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Oslo


Applications are invited from candidates from political science or political economics for the post as postdoctoral researcher on the NRC (Norwegian Research Council) project “The Evolution of Parliamentarism and Its Political Consequences.” The candidate should, in the application letter, explain how their research agenda contributes to the goals of the project:

The number of democracies in the world today is higher than in any other time. The majority of these democracies adopt a parliamentary constitution, that is, one that is based on assembly confidence. Assembly confidence regimes are those in which governments, in order to come to and stay in power, must be at least tolerated by a legislative majority. They can be divided into cases of negative and positive parliamentarism. In stark contrast with scholarship on varieties of presidentialism, the research literature on the evolution and consequences of the two forms of parliamentarism is surprisingly sparse and rudimentary. With this in mind, our goal is (1) to develop fully the distinction between negative and positive parliamentarism and clarify its institutional implications; (2) to trace the origins of the institutions associated with negative and positive parliamentarism; and (3) to study their consequences for the way parliamentary governments operate in an ever more demanding, complex, and global policy environment. The project will provide the first truly intertemporal comparative study of the design and consequences of varieties of parliamentarism.

The appointment is for a fixed, non-tenured term of 4 years. The appointee will have a 25% teaching requirement. Successful applicants must therefore be prepared to teach bachelor’s and master’s level courses within the Department’s course portfolio as well as tutor masters’ students.  The Department organizes teaching into five sections: public policy and administration, comparative politics, political theory, international politics, and research methods.

A comprehensive assessment of the applicant’s scientific qualifications forms the basis of appointment. Successful applicants must hold a relevant PhD degree before taking up the post. The candidate should demonstrate how their research profile fits into the project. We are particularly interested in candidates with extensive experience in data-management and excellent programming skills (e.g. R, Python, SQL). Knowledge of parliamentary systems, contemporary or historical, outside of Western Europe will be an advantage.

Emphasis will also be given to the applicants’ teaching experiences and qualifications, teamwork skills and personal suitability for the position. Applicants, who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of basic formal teaching competence, must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years. Short-listed candidates for the job will be invited to an interview and may be asked to do a trial lecture.
